Electric powertrain will be available across the range
Smart ForTwo cabrio will be the only EV conversions on the market
Smart will be the first manufacturer to offer the entire range with both gasoline and EV powertrains
Smart has revealed a new electric version of the ForTwo and forfour models, which will debut at the Paris Motor Show.
Electric powertrain will be available in a wide range, Smart says makes it the only manufacturer in the world offering the entire range of models with both a combustion engine and driving pure electric battery. Until now, only been available as a Smart ForTwo EV.
Smart ForTwo cabriolet will also be available with electric drive, so now only the power conversion market.
ForTwo has the best reach, at 100miles, with cabrio and forfour at 96miles. Smart electric range before is 90miles, so that little improvement. Intelligent eco mode has been added to the new models, which adjust the curve of the accelerator pedal, and traffic monitor while adjusting the level of regenerative braking, to increase the range as much as possible.
The electric motor will be under the boot floor, as in a gasoline engine. ForTwo will reach a claimed 0-62mph in 11.5 seconds, and 12.7 seconds in the forfour. All models have a limited top speed at 80 mph, to maximize range.
Lithium-ion battery can be charged from the wallbox in 2.5 hours (20-100% charged), and six hours when using a household socket. Which was about half as long for the old electric Smart. A quick charger will be available as an option in 2017, which will provide a full charge in 45 minutes.
Looks wise, you can keep things the same as the standard car, or distinguishing EV you get a safety cell and door mirror in 'green electricity', with the electric drive design package. Brabus personalization program is also available for the Smart ForTwo.
On the inside, the instrument cluster has been replaced by a standard dashboard display that shows the battery status and power levels. Standard kit includes 'smart controls' application, to pre-heat and -Cool your car, and manage remote charging.
Although there is no UK prices are not yet available, more information is expected next week after the unveiling at the Paris Motor Show. The model will be launched in Europe in early 2017.
