Some cars are as blessed with a special edition MX-5, but the icon is still worth a look. The zippy, eager 1.5-liter engine will not be for everyone, but as far as we're concerned, the pick of the range. Being able to enjoy it with a sporty look and additional kits are things okay. sports cars do not come simpler or more fun than this.

Need to know:

  • limited edition, high-spec version of the 1.5-liter MX-5
  • Iconic models feature leather seats, upgraded styling
  • On sale now priced from £ 20,995, with 600 available

special edition MX-5 is an inseparable part of the history of the model - and with the latest version of a fun little roadster is just barely a year old, is already the second Icon Edition.

Limited to 600 models in the UK, Icon is only available with the 1.5-liter, 129bhp, and easily distinguished from relatives, thanks to a series of garish decals boxes under each wing, and finish red ruby to the front bumper, rear view mirror, and the boot spoiler.

As well as the exclusivity that comes with having a limited-run models, you also get an extra on-board kit for your extra expenses. In this case the useful (if a bit unnecessary) things like leather upholstery, rear parking sensors and automatic lights and wipers.

That is a lot of small add up to £ 800 more than the standard SE-L Nav trim where Icon based, but is wonderfully simple recipe MX-5 actually need this extra trimmings?

Leaving any reservations you have about styling at the door (for our money, the model Meteor gray looks better than Crystal White, matching the dark alloy), and Icon approach is just as high spec 1.5, and it makes some feel.

The driving experience is a pleasant blend of the same that has made the drivers interested in coming back for more than a quarter of a century; so this is not a car for anyone who wants to be lazy at the wheel.

With just a little 111lb ft of torque will deploy from small naturally-aspirated engine, you are forced to work the gearbox manually-wound tightly for every ounce of performance. A small gear knob that fits into the palm of your hand to help the effort, make every shift raise a smile, and there is a real satisfaction to wringing machine for all it's worth. It is one of only a handful of modern sports car in which the top three are (almost) below the speed limit.

Of course, you need the right path to really enjoy the car that needs to be stirred so hard to get it going, but because of the MX-5 is now so small and light, pretty much every quiet lane into the right way - always feels lively, interesting, and - most importantly - fun.

However, the fun does not mean the right as far as handling is concerned. There was plenty of body roll, and on bumpy roads MX-5 hop and float around, pogoing on soft springs.
Honestly, you are not likely to care, but if you harbored a deep desire featured bring to the track, then Icon Mazda is not for you.

Yes, more powerful, limited-slip differential-toting, 2.0-liter only the price of a decent meal anymore, but the MX-5 has always designed as 1.5, so that the Icon is intended Mazda car.

While generous upgrade kit list, it does not transform the cabin into a cocoon of luxury from the elements. It has enough room for two people (only - high may disagree), two drinks, and not much else, and a 130 liter boot requires lightweight packaging, even on day trips.

It is suitable for the purpose though. Sat-nav and infotainment system feasible, and the heat from the heater vents blowing desert winds when you need them to - important if you are planning a trip outside the window three days of warm weather known as 'British summer'.

Try to buy Convertible Mini or Fiat 124 Spider with the same level of kit, and you will be at least £ 1,000 out of pocket compared to Mazda, so it is still a good value.

As long as you love the look, then we say go for it. 1.5 version of the MX-5 offers a driving experience that have become extinct every year, and brilliant fun. a small error that was never a barrier for your enjoyment, as long as you do not mind, followed by a strange hatch. This is a car that feels alive, and it will make you feel like that too.
