Ah, the sound. For this is what you will read about all really boils down to. We were in Manhattan, New York City for the first explosion in the Jaguar F-Type SVR all-new, fastest and mot powerful regular production Jaguar ever. In a tunnel. In the evening.
F-Type SVR, in case you need reminding, is the 567bhp 5.0-liter supercharged V8, four-wheel drive version of the F-Type. Due to reach the UK this summer, it was the son of a very limited special edition of Project 7, 2014, which shows how far the F-Type can be pushed as a product of extreme performance.
F-Type SVR, works rapidly rose Special Vehicle Operations division Jaguar Land Rover were also produced Project 7 and Range Rover Sport SVR, is a little more sane and useful follow-up to the Project 7, but not soft.
Based on the F-Type R AWD, in coupe form the F-Type SVR will send from 0-62mph in just 3.7sec and 200mph top speed to. Performance makeover on product performance has been very thorough, with lots of extra cooling and the addition of aerodynamics to help maximize the extra performance and chassis makeover to help the car flew around the circuit but very tuned Jaguar ways to ensure that it remains compliant and can be used daily.
And then there is the exhaust system, which is perhaps most relevant here. It is a lightweight titanium and Inconel exhaust which weighs some 16kg less than the F-Type R AWD's, and has a lot of trickery to deliver what Jaguar claims is "dramatic, goals, hard-edge exhaust note". And, as with the F-Type R AWD, 'naughty button' remains available to the driver, drawing the exhaust in the center console and activated when pressed sends exhaust into the full aural peanut mode.
Jaguar has pulled a lot of strings to have the tunnel closed for five hours on the night of the New York motor show. These tunnels on Park Avenue, and walk more than 422 meters between 33 and 38 street. The speed limit was raised from 25mph to 65mph for a night, but we have not staking any speed cameras in the tunnel
Up passengers board first in one direction, and it was a little slower (at 194mph, still) a convertible version of the F-Type SVR in, with the roof down of course to hear the best sound.
So the noise was, then. It's brilliant. Very beautiful. It's really bloody hard. This volume of their speakers your parents used to have will always distort in if you try to change it up to them. It gets inside you like a party of your neighbors have to 2 with vibration coming through the walls. And above all, the kind of voice that reminds you how great it can be when a car launch a full attack on on one of your senses. That's all before you get turned up and crackles when lifting off. You can probably tell I love it.
It was all just from the passenger seat. When it was my turn to drive it, there is a little less time to Savoir noise as nerves kicking in trying to keep the car in a straight line. It's scary to give full speed in a tunnel that is tight on uneven, slippery road surfaces not designed for all-wheel drive sports car with 567bhp. It was, in a word, life. That, and chuffing fast. However, I do not put a wall even when feeling all giddy with the ringing in my ears, so it was all good safe fun.
We've had some performance cars stand out this year with the Ford Focus RS and BMW M2. F-Type SVR, on first acquaintance, it seems likely every bit as impressive. Just how the heck am I going to sleep tonight with a voice still rings in my ears?
