The Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé, a sportier version of its recently launched GLC compact SUV, has been revealed, and will make its public debut at the New York motor show.
Originally previewed as a lightly veiled concept at last year’s Shanghai motor show, it shares the GLC’s C-Class-based underpinnings and will be produced alongsideit at Mercedes’ Bremen plant in Germany.
Aimed at the BMW X4, Porsche Macan and upcoming Jaguar F-Pace, the high-riding five-door will initially be offered with the choice of a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.1-litre diesel in two different states of tune. Prices are expected to start at around £38,000, a premium of around £3000 over the standard GLC.

At 1600mm long and 4730 mm high, GLC Coupé is 60mm longer and 30mm lower than the X4. It has a wheelbase that is 60mm longer than the BMW, at 2870mm (equal to the GLC SUV) and rides on wheels up to 20in diameter.
Inside, GLC Coupé received the same C-Class-derived interior set-up as GLC, including the 40/20/40 split / folding rear seat.
At launch, the GLC Coupé will come with a choice of three engine options. The first is a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol unit delivering 208bhp and 258lb ft in the GLC 250 4Matic Coupé. It is supported by a 2.1-litre diesel offering 168bhp and 295lb ft in the GLC 220 d 4Matic Coupé and a gutsier 201bhp and 369lb ft in the GLC 250 d 4Matic Coupé.
All models run Mercedes’ 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox and 4Matic four-wheel drive as standard.
The performance leader of the early GLC Coupé line-up is the petrol-powered GLC 250 4Matic Coupé, which hits 62mph from rest in 7.3sec and a maximum speed of 138mph.
Shortly after its UK launch, the model will receive further engine options, including a more powerful version of the 2.0-litre petrol engine with 242bhp in the GLC 300 4Matic Coupé and a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 254bhp and 457lb ft in the GLC 350 d.
Also under development is a petrol-electric-powered GLC 350 e 4Matic Coupé plug-in hybrid model that is claimed to provide a zero-emissions range of up to 19 miles and a 0-62mph time of 5.9sec. It combines the GLC 250 4Matic Coupé’s 2.0-litre petrol engine and a gearbox-mounted electric motor for a combined system output of 315bhp.
Towards a line-up that will initially be GLC 43, the first of the two AMG models are planned. It runs a gasoline engine 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo with 362bhp and 383 lb ft, which is enough to provide GLC claim 43 with a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds.
Mercedes-AMG source also been confirmed to Autocar their plans for even stronger GLC 63 4Matic Coupé. It will receive a gasoline engine AMG twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that produces up to 503bhp.
In an effort to broaden the appeal of the model, Mercedes says it will, in time, offer GLC Coupé in rear-wheel-drive guise and with a six-speed manual gearbox, although only the selected machine.
