Audi Q5, SUV decent, well-built, but rather spectacular, is the best selling car Audi today. Some 1.6 million Q5s have found homes since the 2008 launch of the car, a period coinciding with the growth of broad Audi.
And now there is a new one. At the business level it is really important, even if not exactly pluck heartstrings together in at that news on the street noise of Quattro Group B rally cars will make their parents.
So popular has the Q5 is that Audi has set up a new plant in Mexico on a greenfield site just to build, around 150,000 years initially. This plant will be a global production center for the Q5, and Audi have built the first factory outside Europe for export to global markets.
The new workers will build a car that ticks all the usual boxes of new cars new look exterior, plusher interior, body lighter, and more efficient engines.
Q5 In this case, that the weight savings come from the adoption of mixed materials MLB Evo platform which is new, is seen in other guises in the A4, A5 and Q7. It is said to be up to 90kg lighter than the current model although a slight increase in the trail, and that the weight saving team with a more aerodynamic body for greater efficiency.
Initial engine line-up includes a 2.0-liter diesel with 187bhp, 2.0-liter petrol with 249bhp, 3.0-liter V6 and the range-topping diesel with 282bhp that will follow immediately after the launch. Quattro four-wheel drive and an automatic gearbox is standard on Q5s which will reach the UK.
We have to wait until later in the year 2017 to model SQ5 fruitier, which is set to get a more powerful version of the V6 diesel. A plug-in hybrid version is also in development.
We have no indication of the price yet, but expect prices start at around £ 35,000 when sales start in the UK early next year. There are three trim levels, SE, Sport and S Line, and expect the level of equipment in them to fit A4.
How does it feel?
We were in Mexico to encourage Q5 for the first time. The model we're driving is the first of a new production line at the factory, and we drive with the Audi engineers point out the strange quality niggle with them here and there, but for all intents and purposes this is a model we would get in the UK early next year.
We drove high-powered diesel V6 and four-cylinder gasoline models. Each has an optional air suspension and adaptive dampers fitted to them. The former gets an eight-speed torque converter auto 'and permanent Quattro all-wheel drive, and the last seven dual speed auto clutch' and the Quattro technology Ultra, which can withstand the power delivered to the rear wheels when the conditions meant it was not needed to save fuel.
This is a diesel V6 that most intrigue, and my words were smooth and subtle, which may be a good description of the car as a whole. There is a wide spread of torque is available even with the occasional delivery of hammer is the potential. You certainly will not want for extra performance, and an eight-speed automatic 'are mated to a free and does not stand out.
But you will never mention overtly sporty car, which has a lot to do with its chassis tuning as something else. Q5 is a car that is very competent and predictable, which is fine by the customer, but you can tell there might be enough car involved in there waiting to come out given the chance.
It turned out in fine, overcome with good, well controlled body control, understeer is kept in check with a standard torque vectoring system, but you never get out of the corner with a smile on your face. You also do not end up in the gutter even taking a corner at some speed, which highlights the fact that the chassis has a lot of slack there.
It is a compliment to the old Q5 Porsche Macan SUV sourced basis for class-leading on the same underpinnings as the Audi, and it will be interesting to see what Porsche does when gets his hands on this one. Or indeed Audi is not for the S version, the development of which went well.
What impressed me was the ride quality, which matches the characteristics of a smooth, quiet and comfortable machine. Even the most damaged of the road surface failed to really trouble or disturbing car.
There is also a discernible difference between the cars in different driving modes, seven of which are offered via the Audi Drive Select system. Comfort mode standards are not what you expect, but selecting Sport mode lowers and stiffens the air springs and communicate what the car is done through your ass a little more, and a touch flattering angle. It is still not involved, the mind, not helped by the lack of the feel of the steering.
The air suspension has a 60mm height adjustment therein, the maximum height into reserves of off-road mode. Audi claims the off-road capability as much as you will ever need, and even fit Range Rover in Audi 'real world' off-road course so they say.
2.0-liter petrol we also try to work a little harder at first than the V6 to get it going, but once revs up Q5 moving along at a brisk pace, too. It is a flexible machine that is nice, with a good spread of torque and better sound that diesel is greater. It makes the car feel more alert and nimble touch, too.
We will skip the description of the exterior design, as you surely read the description for each other Audi launched in recent years, but they let us see is new - and sporty. That in which real progress has been made in the new car during the car when aging.
the perceived quality of the interior Audi is reprehensible, and the interior Q5 is undoubtedly the high point. Choice of materials, technological sophistication, and overall fit and finish are all excellent, and the current can not be matched by rivals.
your eyes will be drawn first to the color screen is excellent 12.3in virtual cockpit where the instrument binnacle once lived, featuring everything from the navigation screen for speed. Audi is very good in the other, and the same applies here.
MMI infotainment system, displayed on the 8.3in screen in the center stack, as well as good as ever, ticked every type of use and the box you want to include Wifi connectivity, and Apple and Android Carplay Auto smartphone mirroring function.
Not only is a higher quality interior, it also is more spacious, with room for five adults and an increase boot capacity to 610 liters. Q5 will also allow you to access the boot easier by waving the bottom of the sensor to open it, and also lowers the car models equipped with air suspension to assist the loading of larger, heavier items. Boot lip is rather high though.
The new Q5 has so much going for it: it's quiet, comfortable, lovely to sit in, and is unlikely to cost too much to run thanks to competitive fuel economy and emissions and the residual value is likely to be harmonious as desired brand. Anyone who buys one will do it for one or all of these reasons and will not be disappointed with what is a very impressive car engineered.
But it just is not much fun to drive - SUV Jaguar F-Pace and Porsche Macan has been proven to be - which is a shame is greater in the case of Q5 as you can say it has a mighty fine chassis are just waiting to be set in a more involving way. If Audi SQ5 not do it yourself, you bet Porsche Macan will be the next.
