BMW 2002 Hommage returns wearing iconic livery at Pebble Beach

BMW M2-based 2002 Hommage concept signifies the 50th anniversary of the original 200 turbo

The BMW 2002 Hommage has returned to the spotlight at this week’s Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach, as BMW once again celebrates the passing of 50 years since its original boosted model, the 2002 turbo, entered production.

The concept was first shown at Villa d’Este in May wearing blue paintwork, but it now sports an orange ‘turbomeister’ livery, designed in mimic to the iconic Jagermeister 2002 livery racing cars of the 1970s.

Other than the new look, the 2002 Hommage concept is completely unchanged, so it still features the same classic 2002-inspired shark nose, vertical intakes either side of its front and a number of air intakes to optimise airflow and maximise downforce.

The car’s underpinnings are based on those of an M2, however, BMW hasn’t confirmed whether that car’s 365bhp twin-turbocharged straight-six engine has been retained, and instead has called the 2002 Hommage a pure “design concept”.

BMW design boss Karim Habib said of the refreshed model: “The 2002 Hommage celebrates the extraordinary feats of engineering on which BMW turbo technology is based. With its iconic orange/black paintwork, the car has a colour scheme and livery synonymous in the minds of many motor sport fans with the triumphs of the 1970s.”
