How long does it take to put a concept car into production with a silly name? In the case of Maserati, which Kubang 13 years. Fortunately, after a long wait, the name was changed to Levante and finally reached Australia.
Levante is the Italian carmaker's idea of an SUV and is set to double sales of the marque in Australia and increase the global volume for the Italian brand famous far and above what Modenese manufacturer ever achieved. The current global production for the Maserati stand at around 35,000.
The next question is, what we got for our patience?
Maserati today announced - after a few months of teasing $ 150,000 price point - three specification levels for the Levante SUV, ranging from $ 139,990 to entry-level and stretch to $ 159,990 for sports and luxury pack specification.
Price Zegna Edition unfinished and local representatives are not interested in speculating on the price, but it may be quite hefty silk trim given exclusivity for Maserati.
There will be only one machine available to date, the 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, putting 203kW and 600Nm of torque. Electricity runs through Maserati Q4 system to all four wheels via an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is almost everywhere in the classroom. 0-100km / h is sent 6.9 seconds and returns a combined figure (European testing) of 7.2L / 100km.
Maserati Australia COO Glen Sealey refused to rule out eventual arrival of Levante gasoline engine but it shows that the figures for diesel - 90% of diesel luxury SUV market - means the diesel engine is a no-brainer. Foreign range including S V6 and V8, although the latter had not yet entered into production.
Maserati's Skyhook adaptive damping join the standard air suspension, allowing for five different ride heights depending on the mode and speed of road driving.
All cars have a long list of standard equipment, including leather trim, electric everything, heated front seats, screen 8.3-inch USB, Bluetooth, CarPlay, Android Auto, satnav, separate front and reversing camera, parking sensors front and rear, alloy 19 -inch, cruise control, bi-xenon headlights, keyless entry and start, electric tailgate.
The Luxury Pack adds Alcantara roof lining, chrome boot sill, column power steering, body colored external slim, 20-inch alloys, a full premium leather, Harmon Kardon sound system and a steel door frame.
Sport Pack adds spoiler sports, body-colored exterior trim, futon sports seats with 12-way power adjustment, sports pedals, electric adjustable steering column, alloy 21-inch, Harmon Kardon sound, sport steering wheel, red brake calipers and stainless steel door trim ,
On the safety front, there are six airbags, blind spot detection, braking assistance, rear cross traffic alert as well as the usual ABS and traction and stability control systems.
Forward collision alert and lane departure warning are available as options. Levante has not become crash-tested by EuroNCAP.
In addition to the package, there is a large variety of options and accessories (including Maserati tow bar for the first time, rated to 2700kg with a braked trailer). These include the type of wood trim, thirteen colors, brake caliper colors, interior colors and wheels alone.
Mr Sealey said that more than a hundred customers have put a "heavy deposits" for their car has not been touched or seen in the flesh, or even known specifications.
The Levante is not the highlight of the delay of thirteen years - with the Quattroporte, Ghibli and Gran Turismo, Maserati says they covered half of the luxury car market segment. SUV is another part of the market and Levante will do the heavy lifting for the entire brand. The current thinking is that the target of 50,000 for the annual production will be easily exceeded.
Local arm has gone from selling 50 cars per year in Australia and New Zealand ten years ago to 500 after the expansion line-up between 2014 and 2015. Levante is expected to add another 500-600 sales per year. Although close to the price of the Ghibli, the company expects 85% conquest sales than people skip or trading in Ghibli.
Maserati is banking on exclusivity resume, a thousand cars per year is still a small part of the Australian car market as a whole. Year to date, the SUV is more than $ 100,000 and with a three liter engine or larger already sold 5500 units, so that the target of 500 units overall for Maserati is not too ambitious.
If you've already booked one, deliveries starting in January 2017. If you put your money down today, you will wait until at least Easter depending on the specifications.
The new car certainly looks the part and abroad drive both on and off-road have been promising. The real test for Australian buyers will be how the attempt on Australian roads.
