The much-anticipated new 2017 Fiat 124 Spider, which is scheduled to arrive in dealerships this summer, is both undeniable undeniably Italian and Japanese. It's based on the same platform as the 2016 Mazda MX-5 and built for the Fiat-Chrysler Car at Mazda's Hiroshima plant, with engines supplied by Fiat-Chrysler. But it was far from the same car as the MX-5, and features hundreds of changes throughout to give a different look, feel and driving experience.
140 extra millimeters, 0 Joint Sheetmetal
Being born again, 2017 Fiat 124 Spider was designed by the Centro Stile in Turin, Italy, and reminiscent of the original 124 from 1966 without degrading yourself copying. In front there is a trapezoidal grille fascia expressive, as in the original, and has the same distinctive character line running from the front fender and kicked over the door handle to emphasize the hamstrings. It is not shared sheetmetal at all with the MX-5, and the second slightly longer (140 mm) and a fraction wider (5 mm) of roadster Mazda, with just over half the extra length in the front to accommodate the Fiat engine slightly larger, and the rest in the back, giving 124 more reminiscent of the original deck, and a slightly larger trunk (140 L vs 130 L in MX-5).
1 Turbo, 160 Horses, 184 Pounds Twist
Under the hood, instead Mazda SkyActiv 2.0L naturally aspirated four-cylinder (engine good for 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque) Fiat 124 gets a 1.4L Multiair turbocharged four-cylinder engine is the same as used in the Fiat 500 Abarth. In 124 Spider Classico and Lusso trims engine tuned to crank out 160 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque (within 500 Abarth was a net 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque), while in the 124 Spider Abarth was pushed further to add four horsepower extra, for a total of 164 hp.
Even in routine prune it was a real cracker machine - essentially Italian with free revving character excited, plenty of torque down low, and the exhaust note is nice (it was quieter than the snap-crackle-pop exhaust note 500 Abarth, but still good). 124 extra power means acceleration is about the same as the MX-5 (about six seconds to 100 km / h), although Fiat 53 kg of additional weight compared to 1,058 kg MX-5. Fuel economy is about the same as well, to 6.5 L / 100km on the highway.
6 Speeds in 2 Flavours
Spider 124 machine can be connected to either the transmission Mazda-sourced six-speed manual (not the same as the MX-5 apparently, but one is more suitable for high torque generated by the motor turbocharged) or Fiat / Chrysler- sourced six-speed automatic, as used in the Fiat 500L. The manual transmission shifts quickly and easily, has a light clutch and joy right to operate. Like automatic upshift for the economy, so unless you get Abarth with Sport mode button that you will often be tempted to use the console-mounted shifter into gear.
2 Seats, 1 Familiar Cockpit
124 Spider may be completely different from the MX-5 on the outside and under the hood, but inside it is completely familiar in for anyone sitting in the latest generation of Mazda roadster. It not only has the layout of the two seats the same basis, it also got the gauges large, clear and easy to read the same (except Abarth, who gets tachometer red-faced), which is awkwardly placed, but moving cupholders same, cubby locked together between the seats instead of the glovebox that is, easy-to-operate on the same soft, Mazda-sourced infotainment system is the same, and the seat fit-like-a-glove together.
The difference between the structure of the chair, the increased use of soft-touch materials, and increased insulation (including an acoustic glass windshield) for a quieter ride. The suspension is also tuned to be more chewy (no, not softer, more supple only). Headroom is unlimited with the top down, but the driver for about 6'1 "definitely want to check fit with the top up.
3 Trims, 2 Suspensions, 1 Fun Ride
Fiat 124 Spider comes in three trim levels, ranging from $ 33,495 for Classico, which gets 16-inch wheels aluminum, manual air conditioning, cloth upholstery, steering wheel wrapped in leather, keyless entry remote, pushbutton start, the system six-speaker audio, dual exhaust stainless , manual soft top, and a body-colored glass surround.
The Lusso starts at $ 36,495 and adds alloy 17-inch, front fog lights, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, silver finished glass surround and a roll bar, leather-faced heated seats, wrapped cluster brow, 7.0-inch media center touchscreen, automatic climate control, keyless proximity entry and back-up camera.
