MPG, operating costs and CO2

Surprisingly affordable to run for the performance-focused models like
For a model of performance, economy and emissions are impressive, down from 257g / km for the VW Golf R32 parents to 199g / km for lighter VW Golf R. Fuel economy up to about 4mpg to 33.2mpg for the manual gearbox, while fitting the optional DSG automatic transmission bumps this figure up to 33.6mpg. The new version - due in 2014 - would be more economical again, with emissions as low as 159g / km.

Engine, drive and performance
4.1 / 5
Four wheel drive system provides impressive grip in all weather
Under the hood of the VW Golf R, there is a highly tuned version of the engine of the VW Golf GTI old. This results in an impressive 265bhp, while the 4MOTION four-wheel drive system provides plenty of grip while cornering. the steering is not too light, while the brake feel very strong. Prefer twin-clutch DSG gearbox and several gear changes are a bit erratic when using a fully automatic 'D' mode. However, freeway speed the car feels relaxed and can cover long distances in a surprising comfort. A new VW Golf R is on the road, though, with nearly 300bhp and a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds.

Interior & comfort
3.2 / 5
Firm but not uncomfortable, with user-friendly interior same
Running on a stiffer suspension and a lower, Golf R is firm but not uncomfortable. With a specially tuned power-steering, R has a sharper and more direct feel than the lower price VW Golf GTI, too. Firm and supportive seats and driving position is easily adjusted to suit all shapes and sizes - which means almost anyone can get comfortable. It gets a chunky, easy to operate controls similar to the standard VW Golf, making it an impressive car comfortable to cover a long distance.

Practicality and boot space
3.4 / 5
Golf is a practical hatchback - even in the specification R
By the standards of the VW Golf, the interior will seat four adults in relative comfort - while the figure hugging front seats supportive and well-supported. The rear seats are also nice, although the three-door offers reduced practicality, as you would expect. Is exactly the same size as the standard Golf MK6 hathcback, impressive large as a fast car.

Reliability & safety
3.5 / 5
Beautifully made and very reliable
Like the previous generation Volkswagen Golf R has a full five-star Euro NCAP test rating, while maintaining the 16th position is solid at Auto Express survey of 2013 drivers Power, with a strong sign for the ride quality and handling. Clearly VW Golf R is a completely different kettle of fish, but still got the same solid interior, with plenty of tried and tested mechanical parts. A new model is on his way in 2014, and we expect to continue to record solid reliability VW.

The price, value for money & Options
2.4 / 5
VW hold their value well, and R is no exception
VW Golf R is very expensive for a hatchback but did not offer serious performance for the money. It is equipped with a new front and rear bumpers complete with LED running lights, while Xenon headlights and a new black grille adds a sporty look. The changes continue inside with a set of distinctive aluminum badge 'R' and the new seats finished in gray Alcantara. Thanks to the standard Golf's desire compared to major rivals, you'll get more for it when you sell it on. Optional Adaptive Chassis Control is expensive extra, but well worth the extra money.
