About three-fifths of your body mass is water, the key to life. Scientists explore the reaches of the universe to a liquid form hoping that in which they found the water there may be other life. BMW has found some life in the water, too, spraying stuff into the intake plenum M4 GTS S55 twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine to make more power.
It is not only the injection of water makes special GTA. This is the latest in a long line of cars M jumped-up that was never sold in the US before now, starting with E30 M3 Evolution and most recently the E92 M3 GTS, which is packaged 4.4-liter V-8. Water injection is not a new technology, even for a production car. More than 50 years ago, General Motors offers water injected turbocharged engine in its 1962-1963 Oldsmobile Jetfire. If you never heard of that one, it may be due in part converted to use conventional carburetor after the secondary injector system dry when the owner does not fill the tank of liquid "Turbo-Rocket", as GM called methyl-water cocktail.
Water injection is an effective way to cool the intake charge of the engine push. In short path from the air filter, through the turbos, on a dual-cam cylinder head, and through the intercooler air-to-liquid, compressed air can reach temperatures over 212 degrees. According to Jürgen Poggel, head of M GmbH development of engines, liquid water injected into the heat chamber cools the intake charge around 77 degrees in most circumstances. In the most extreme cases, he said, it can cut hot climates to 120 or 140 degrees.
Fluid, as it transitions from a liquid state to a gas, can do this magic. The evaporation process to convert the majority of unwanted heat into the humidity is not harmful. Lowering the temperature of the intake prevents engine knocking and blast unwanted fuel, and also allows the turbos to produce more impulse-21.6 psi compared to 17.2 in the regular-M4 and electronics to advance the time. The result in this case is a 49-hp bump from the 444-hp Competition Package M4, to 493 horsepower.
BMW E85 can be injected (or alcohol-water mixtures such as GM did) with the same, if not more improved performance, but it Poggel said, will change emissions. BMW does not want a machine that can never be out of compliance if the exhaust secondary tank ran dry, such as diesel goes without urea. (We're curious to see what the tuners like Dinan might come up with.) Additional water vapor in the combustion chamber does nothing for emissions because there are no flammable in distilled water. Run a dry water tank and the engine switched to 444-hp track. On the racetrack, 1.3 gallon tank will be emptied under the trunk floor at roughly the same level as the fuel tank of 15.9 gallons. water injection is only active above 5000 rpm and full load conditions, so that the driver will need to rehydrate less frequently, perhaps every fifth or sixth fuel fill-up, depending on driving style. It is unclear whether the dealership will soon be distilled stock "factory-spec" water by BMW part numbers.
To reduce the possibility of corrosion and to prevent water from freezing, water lines are drained each time the machine is turned off. system primes in seconds on startup, well before the driver should call 5000 rpm under full load on the engine is cold.

There is more magic in the chassis. BMW chose meaty Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, 265 / 35ZR-19 front and 285 / 30ZR-20 at the rear, torsion fight gut-punch and the rest of the chassis changes in steps. Basic suspension setup, struts at the front with a rigid rear subframe mounted bring multilink suspension and an electronically controlled limited-slip differential at the rear, fixed, but the three-way adjustable dampers with external reservoir and adjustable spring perch (they can lower the car 0.8 inch to track tasks) that work here. Additional clutches Cup 2s also required changes to the engine: Flood brought an extra liter of motor oil to prevent oil starvation high g maneuvers.
With the extra power and grip, we expect GTS to run the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds. Drivers tend to do a lot of sprint just to hear the engine at full speed, because it sounds like a wild animal. BMW cites 493 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of twist, but it feels more like 550 each. And purists, rejoice! No artificial soundtrack pumping through the speakers here. All sounds are 100 percent pure inline-six.
Cup 2s help market the steering M4 with valid feedback coming through the suede-wrapped steering wheel, something that is lacking in the current generation M3 / M4. We prefer a larger brake pedal, or a little more distance between the brake and throttle pedal, to create a left-foot braking easier. BMW claims the aero package, with front splitter manually extended 2.4 inches to track position and the rear wing in the attitude of the most aggressive of the three, produces 63 pounds of downforce at the front axle and 210 behind at 186 mph.
With a limited run of 700 GTSs around the world and 300 dog-eared to the United States, specialty M4 is also exclusive. BMW said dealers are already talking to all the cars and that the buyer inspection has begun. the car has no concerns about his ability to sell each M4 GTS and expect most to be used as they are intended, as a dedicated track car that should not be trailered to the paddock.
