When Michael, my Uber driver, see where I was headed, he started a small talk with: how do you pronounce "Peugeot"? Eager to infuse a bit of automotive trivia, I told him the right way to say it: "POO-Zho" and that if he ever needed a refresher, each agent has a pronunciation guide stickered on the façade. Then he asked: mura ba yun? Cross-mura kasi mukha eh (they cost? It's because they look cheap). At the time, I thought: Oh! If I worked for Peugeot or one possessed, comments that will feel like a knife stabbing through my chest. Although I can try to repeat such things as how they are filled with unique details have yet complicated and that they were made in France, and so on; I just ask Michael to try the new 308, either hatchback or wagon. Discounts budget of 301 which I hate, this is the first major car that lives up to the values of the Peugeot brand.
When I saw it, I knew Peugeot will be something more than just surprising value to 308. Compared with previous designs like the RCZ and to some degree, even the 208 GTi, the 308 will be more to the visual sense of quality and refinement. It may be a downer for fans of the old Peugeot, but neat and attractive design at least have a point or a line out of place. It is certainly more quiet and formal than before and that Peugeot brought inevitable comparisons with the Volkswagen Golf. Nonetheless, at least 308 discontinue some cute touches like a cat in the headlights and taillights. This certainly sporty looking hatchback compared with a station wagon, but personally I like roofline slightly tapered the last one, I dare say, is reminiscent of the Jaguar wagon. Interestingly, the test unit Petrol 1.6 Allure comes with a set of 17-inch wheels, although the rolling stock which is smaller in the 16-inch.
Inside, the Peugeot 308 continues to move toward something classy. cockpit cleaned by itself, is more reminiscent of the concept of a compact car production. Immediately, I noticed a lack of physical buttons. The center stack, where you usually find most of the control, is now just a piece of plastic with chrome strips and a large volume knob. Everything, and I mean everything, has migrated to the large 9.7-inch touch screen that provides access to everything from the climate control settings even vehicle infotainment. Touchscreen icons themselves are large and easy-to-hit, but still have a laggy response I was hoping for at least separate controls for the climate.
Perceived quality of the material, is by and large, powerful features of the interior of this 308. Most plastics are pleasing to the eyes and highlights free metal works extremely well placed to spruce things up. However, there are some areas that are hard, scratchy plastics especially in the area below the touch screen. An advice for Peugeot: if you're not going to put any controls in a plastic sheet next to the volume buttons, might as well go all out and make it look like a floating dashboard.
Elimination of physical buttons is by far not the most controversial aspects of 308. That award went to the adoption of a small steering wheel diameter coupled with an instrument panel mounted on the dashboard. Peugeot is calling "i-Cockpit" concept and it should improve driver visibility while eliminating the need for expensive solutions such as head-up display. Does it work? Must see more rudder instead of through them to see the gauges can take some getting used to, but yes, it does work. higher driver or greater understandably will not judge the adoption of this set-up as a success, but what I found is that if you lower your sitting position to a more than usually, it becomes fine. And on that note, the 308 does offer plenty of seat adjustment to keep things comfortable. Plus, suede and leather combination upholstery also did a good job keeping everyone firmly fixed in their throne during spirited driving.
Although the front passenger will have nothing to complain about, the rear accommodation is less than stellar. Children will find it easy to get comfortable, but more legroom needed to fit three adults adult. Luggage space, whether on a hatchback or wagon plentiful.
This is a sign that you should skip entry-level hatchback altogether and head straight to 1.6 BlueHDi starting with Allure station wagon variant. I find that this is easily the better of the two engines and easily show of excellence Peugeot diesel. Not only is it as smooth and quiet as a partner of gasoline, but it punchy even from low revs. As the speed rises, there is much more to call on the mid-range and even quite at the top-end to overtake. 100 km / h takes around two seconds slower than gasoline, but it actually feels faster than that. This transmission is also more suitable for this machine, eliminating the problem of shift shock experienced with gasoline. And of course, being a diesel, it does 12.98 km / L in city traffic (average speed of 13 km / h) compared to gasoline is 6:37 km / L (average speed of 11 km / h).
Driving dynamics, regardless of the GTi models, not the strong suit for Peugeot, but with 308, they have closed the gap greatly. Not only is it convenient, but it's really involved (preferably in the form of a hatchback) and neat and precise handling.
The steering wheel downsized take some getting used to, because as we all know, small diameter wheels make for poor lever. More alternately sometimes necessary to negotiate a bend or corner, the fact is only compounded by the lack of feedback (station wagon has felt a bit heavier). Nevertheless, after some socialization, 308 do not provide good precision. Body roll is well controlled and required to bend properly.
And surprisingly, the 308 is also very suitable and comfortable over bumps. Peugeot is very proud of the new rear suspension design in which the torsion beam suspended by the arms left behind. Along with re-position dampers, allowing the rear wheels to offer a variety of slightly curved movements are not the strictly vertical. This is equivalent to lump all of which were absorbed better make for a smoother, quieter ride.
For Peugeot, 308 arrival signal their intention that they are ready to go beyond the usual french quirkiness that they have been talking steadily over the last few years. They do not need to conjure up images of the Champs-Élysées or the Louvre or Louis Vuitton or Chanel pants their products anymore, because their car can now finally stand on their own merit. All in all, the 308 offers the appearance and finishing materials that make it feel more premium than ever. Although some peculiarities remain, there is no denying the progress made in the repair, comfort and build quality. Now what is needed is to communicate this to the public to buy the Philippines.
