Changes to the ASX are designed to boost sales of Mitsubishi's smallest SUV by building on the success of the larger Outlander and L200 pick-up
- ASX redesigned to look more like larger Outlander
- New range of trim levels, but engines continue unchanged
- On sale now, with prices starting at £15,999
An updated version of the Mitsubishi ASX has just gone on sale, with a new look and revised set of trim levels available.
The most obvious changes (which were first seen at this year's Geneva Motor Show) are to the front of the car, where the new ‘Dynamic Shield’ makes the ASX look much more like the company’s larger – and bigger-selling – crossover, the Outlander. On top of that, the car also has a new ‘shark’s fin’ antenna, as well as new materials inside.
Also new are the trim levels, with ASX 2, 3, 4 and 5 replacing the old range. Even the most basic model comes with alloy wheels, air-con, Bluetooth connectivity, all-round electric windows and seven airbags. Beyond that, ASX 3 adds cruise control, smarter looks and a DAB radio, as well as upgrading the air-con to climate control; ASX 4 brings four-wheel drive, leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and an infotainment system (with sat-nav) based around a 7.0-inch touch-screen.
Last to join the range – in January next year – will be the top-of-the-range ASX 5, which comes with Nappa leather upholstery in a choice of three colours, while the premium carpets have colour-coded piping. As a finishing touch, the car also has heated rear seats, an electrically adjustable driver’s seat and LED interior lighting.
The one thing hasn’t changed is the engine range, so buyers can still choose between a 1.6-litre petrol engine and two diesel units, a 1.6 and a 2.2. The petrol engine comes only with front-wheel drive, and the larger diesel unit is available uniquely with four-wheel drive, leaving the smaller diesel as the only one to be available with the choice of two- or four-wheel drive,
The full range – which rivals the likes of the Honda Honda HR-V and Fiat 500X – is covered by a five-year, 62,500-mile warranty, and is available to order now, with prices starting at £15,999 for an ASX 2 with the 1.6-litre petrol engine.
