With its SUV inspired styling, 20-inch alloys, and imaginative interior design, the latest Scenic is a stunning alternative to the plethora of ‘vans-with-windows’ that have become the MPV norm.
Based on its looks alone, we feel confident the new Scenic has a bright future.
It’s not the most refined or engaging motor to drive, but its spacious, airy cabin, family-friendly versatility and easy practicality, married to SUV styling, gives it a showroom appeal that few, if any, alternatives can match.
The Auto Trader expert verdict: 3.7

Pros
Striking design
Family friendly cabin
Flexible diesel engines
Cons
Remote steering
High levels of wind noise
Trim quality could be better
The Scenic is the latest Renault to feature the bold diamond badge and distinctive swept back grille, but the family resemblance to the Captur and Kadjar crossovers doesn’t stop there. While the kinked rear window line and faux running boards at the base of the doors give it a sturdy appearance, the two-tone colour combinations, large wheel-arches with 20-inch alloys, and a raised ride height all contribute to what is currently one of the most dramatic looking MPVs
Scenic's interior is trimmed intelligent and feels light, airy and thanks surprisingly spacious with large expanses of glass. On the lower trim models, the dashboard features a 7-inch portrait mounted touch screen, with higher trim models are equipped with a 8.7 inch screen.
In general, it is very easy to navigate the system, but it was not really fast: on several occasions to be a buffer between the screen transition.
Although there are many adjustments to the steering wheel and driver's seat, the driving position is far back from the windshield, making it difficult to assess where the car's nose begins and ends. That said, high ground clearance, raised rear seating and large windows mean at least the kids will have a decent view of the world from the side window.
The materials used in the cabin feel strong enough, even though a lot of switches and buttons shortage damping convincing than those found in the VW Touran. Similarly, this Scenic door sounded pretty hollow when slammed shut.
There are plenty of neat touches in Scenic, all intended to make family life a little easier. This includes underfloor lidded drawer front and rear to store children's toys, rear view additional mirrors to help keep an eye on what they are doing, a center sliding console armrest-come-storage, and drawers spring in the glove box of traditional. You need to make sure your front passenger seat back far enough to avoid a knock on the knee though.
At the rear there is a tray backrest, and a split-folding rear seat and slide to maximize leg or luggage room. In addition, the rear seats can be removed and folded flat by using a switch in the boot or via the touch screen. It's just a shame you have to fold them up using a good old muscle power. There is a 572-liter luggage space in the rear seats in place, which is large enough to cope with most of the family's needs.
Our ride and handling rating 3/5
You may wonder how a family MPV could rise to the level of comfort on 20-inch alloy?
You may wonder how a family MPV could rise to the level of comfort on 20-inch alloy? Although the wheel diameter Scenic is wasteful, as well as tire sidewalls. Couple that with a relatively soft suspension, and Scenic can take the sting out of all but the largest road bumps. You could still hear and feel the back of galloping on some larger lumps, and a number of road friction can be felt in the cabin, but it was not the worst aspect of this Scenic. an award that goes to the amount of wind noise from the door mirrors, which becomes annoying at anything over 50 mph.
Scenic lack of steering connections will not trouble too many parents in the school run, but the lack of feedback means can be tricky to park the car in tight spaces.
Performance Our rating 3/5
Scenic is available with two petrol and no less than six diesel engines. So far, we've tried the 1.5-liter diesel Hybrid Assist, the 158bhp 1.6 diesel and 128bhp 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine.
hybrid uses extra battery and a small electric motor to increase the 1.5-liter diesel low-speed driveability, reduce CO2 emissions in the process. This effectively means you can attract a higher gear at low revs - the roundabout can be handled in three, rather than two teeth, without fear of bogging down the engine.
1.6-liter diesel engine that can get a little vocal Scenic if you really give a nut, but it has a mid-range is strong enough, so rarely needs to be expanded beyond the comfort zone. This machine is also equipped with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, which is surprisingly smooth shift, it felt more like a sophisticated automated twin-clutch gearbox rather than less.
1.2 turbo surprisingly cheerful far off the mark, so much so that your passengers will still be aware that simple capacity. After the initial impulse was spent, the machine does not have the flexibility of a mid-range enough, so if you regularly carry a full contingent, you would be better off with one of the diesel engines.
Running costs Our rating 4/5
Hybrid produces official fuel economy figure 80.7mpg and CO2 emissions of just 92g / km.
Unfortunately, Assist Hybrid Scenic command a significant premium over the standard 1.5 diesel, and although a little additional flexibility is a boon - especially in city driving conditions - it does not lower emissions enough to reduce company car tax bill, so it will remain a rare sight in roads in England.
Hybrid produces official fuel economy figure 80.7mpg and CO2 emissions of just 92g / km, while the 1.5 diesel entry gives 72.4mpg and 100g / km.
Reliability Our rating 3/5
Fresh out the box Scenic too new for reliability data, but based on the same platform as the Nissan Qashqai, so it shares many of the same mechanical and electronic. Qashqai is a player who is strong enough, so that bodes well for Scenic. That said, Renault is currently sitting around the mid-ranking manufacturer Warranty Direct, while Nissan occupies a significant position nobler. As the two marques built in various countries, which may have some bearing on how they assess for reliability.
Safety Our rating 4/5
Renault has a reputation for safety that some other car manufacturer can match.
Renault has a reputation for safety that some other car manufacturer can match. Scenic is equipped with a complete range of kits include: six airbags; stability control; Active emergency braking with pedestrian detection; emergency brake assist; tire pressure monitoring; and two Isofix points on the rear. You also get a lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, hill-hold assist and automatic headlight beam adjustment.
In crash tests by Euro NCAP, Scenic done well, get a full five star rating overall, including an impressive score of 90% for the protection of adults and 80% rating for child protection.
Equipment Our rating 3/5
Most Scenic version came well equipped. Even the entry-level Expression + provides dual zone climate control, four powered windows, electronic parking brake, LED running lights, cruise control and a touch screen 7.0-inch infotainment system that combines Bluetooth and DAB radio.
The Dynamique Nav adds more features, including front and rear parking sensors, rear seat tray, a sliding center console, rear reading lamps, sun blinds for the rear window, hands-free entry and start up, and sat-nav.
Top end Dynamique S Nav adds part-leather upholstery, color head-up display, fixed panoramic sunroof, Bose sound system, and a larger 8.7-inch touchscreen. The most expensive Signature range-topper has full leather upholstery and full LED lights.
Why buy? Our rating 4/5
Scenic affordable to buy and run and offers a family friendly environment that intelligently designed.
Scenic is not particularly exciting to drive and it can feel a little awkward for remote steering. It is also a bit noisy at highway speeds thanks to the high level of wind noise. These warnings aside, Scenic affordable to buy and run and offers a family friendly environment that intelligently designed. Crucially though, it provides a level of style and appeal of the existing showroom another MPV can match, and that can only be good news for residual values.
