Some of the comments during a time of deep and entertaining with Ariel boss Simon Saunders, did not make it into our interview recently published but well worth an airing.
this one has been intriguing me most: "A bit tongue in cheek, I said we could make a limousine chauffeur driven. This is far from Atom and we may make only four years, but hopefully it will be a limousine best-driving your can buy because it is designed for the job. "
Saunders stressed that Ariel could make a variety of vehicles, rather than completely serious. But in an age where start-ups arrived touting a new supercar or a lightweight sports car - in what was a solid, established markets - only to disappear after a limited budget runs out a few months later, I longed for someone to try and make it intentionally different.
I imagine it will be powered electrically, with near-silent engine and expand the range of small-pocketed somewhere away from the occupants. I imagine the air suspension and an aluminum spaceframe, though not always with the long bonnet - or any hat - required by a big V8 or V12. In terms of materials and design, I imagine it to be very different in, do whatever concept car has so far been allowed to do.
Yes, it would be more expensive to develop than the plastic-bodied sports car and, for sure, you will not sell them with a hundred it would cost a lot to get together. But it will cost a bit more to buy, too.
"If you do what the big manufacturers can not, dare not, will not, or are not interested, that's our niche," said Saunders. Ariel own things other than concern themselves with the limo. But I would like to see someone try to make it work.
