Porsche Boxster Spyder first drive review

Auto Trader verdict:

Porsche Boxster Spyder is the fastest version, the most extreme and the most exclusive of the 981-series roadster. Chassis incredible, sharp steering and intoxicating flat six engines help deliver one of the most valuable sports car driving experience at any price. However, it also Boxster most expensive and most practical as well, thanks to the cabin roof stripped down and annoying fiddly. The Spyder special, but also a timely reminder of just how good could Boxster - Porsche we hope to use this as a basis for the next generation of GTS 718 models wearing the badge.

Need to know:

Stripped back 'pure' version of the 981-series Boxster
370bhp 3.8-liter flat-six engine, 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds
Manually operated fabric roof to save weight

Versions of the most extreme and impractical from a 981-series Porsche Boxster. It is also the rarest, and cool, thanks to the beautifully curved rear deck is made from a single sheet of aluminum, plus nameplate destined Spyder made famous by Hollywood, James Dean and its royalty light 550 Spyder.

Aggressive, Porsche Motorsport inspired front bumper makes it 10mm longer nose-to-tail on the Boxster GTS, and for riding on the passive sports suspension as standard, it is 10mm lower. At 1300kg, it is 30kg lighter as well, especially since there is no electric-folding roof, door handles or even radio. Although you can restore the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment, that privilege will cost a further £ 2,141.

The main draw of the Boxster Spyder, however, is the engine and drivetrain. For the first time, Porsche has installed larger, normally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-six to the Boxster to develop 370bhp. This is the same unit that features in the Cayman GT4 race-honed, and the like GT4, it is equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox.

How does it feel?

This is a Porsche Boxster; strengthened: noisier, more direct, more visceral. He still has a good handling, the driving position is superb and the inherent balance associated with the mid-engine sports car, but this machine gives Spyder the angry edge intoxicating.

Linear power delivery into the upper end of a glorious building that goes beyond the license-losing territory, while downshifting is crisp, short-throw gearbox or throttle followed gave rise to distinctive crackle. It was a very rewarding journey that is supported by equally emotive soundtrack, and a further highlighted by the arrival of the newly launched 718 Boxster which puts a lot of rage, normally-aspirated flat-six retired, at least for now.

Every weight loss difficult to detect, especially since our test car featured a package Spyder classic interiors (£ 1445), reversing camera (£ 446), heated seats (£ 284), digital radio (£ 324) and the Bose surround sound system (£ 801) to get back a bit of luxury.

Substitution in feels a little sharper, but it's because the faster steering rack, borrowed from the 911 Turbo. Quality travel quite firmly, particularly on bumpy surfaces, but the damping qualities ensure that it never crashy, even though we were in little doubt that the Boxster GTS with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is more convenient and offer more obedience.

There is heavy and precision required when operating all of the controls that not only forces you to engage with the driving experience - physically and mentally - but also really benefit from the rich to explore hit a broad rev range.

the roof will be loved and hated in equal measure. The good news is that it looks bespoke, can cope with the automatic car wash and the 180mph top speed of the car. The bad news is fiddly process required to delete: shifted from the roof rail electrical header, but then you have to step out of the car to open the boot, unclip the support fly, manually retract the word roof and boot shut. Even with practice, the process takes a good minute of faffing, which may be unbearable for your passengers, especially if it rains. What adds more frustrating is the fact you can not access the rear boot unless the roof down.

Should I buy one?

It may be too raw to be considered as a daily driver. The lack of improvement, cabin noise and the roof will thwart fiddly if you have to use the Spyder daily. However, as the second or even third car, or perhaps sad, as a financial investment for the future, the Spyder offers one of the purest, most thrilling and thoroughly engaging driving experience you can buy at any price.

However, with the former models almost new currently sits close to the £ 90,000, the entire RS Ford Focus over the original price, it seems that speculators have turned Spyder into a cash cow others destined for the garage collectors and auction houses, is not something that should be encouraged, and enjoyed.
