Fiat 500X is distinctive and characterful style compact crossover with a good level of standard equipment. However, shortcomings in comfort, practicality, performance and value for money conspired to make him fall short of best in class.
Exterior
nametag should offer strong clues to the styling cues of the five-door crossover, but the 500X still managed to wear retro-inspired with good, and far more convincing than a brother MPV, the 500L. Depending on your preference, you can give it 500 times you see the city for the 500 vibration supersized (available in Pop, Pop Star and Lounge trim level) or off-road look that adds a plate of false skid and bumper (available in Cross and Cross Plus version) for more rugged attitude. We will avoid the Pop version, which revealed his status with the entry-level 16-inch steel wheels and non-painted door mirrors.
Interior
Fiat 500X cabin full of character and charm, with a button-like boiled sweet and chunky door handles. seats are supportive, too, though they do not feel as high-set as in other crossovers, and infotainment screen is easy to operate. All the main controls feel chunky and solid, but some of the larger part of the plastic around the doors and transmission tunnel were itching to touch and feel brittle. Determine the model-off-road bias and a body-colored dashboard fascia will be exchanged with gunmetal with sand paper texture. It's not a good thing.
Practicality
The 500X is almost as long and heavy as a Volkswagen Golf, but it is only slightly wider than the Volkswagen Polo. True, the boot has a removable floor to help create a flat loading bay and it was a decent size (350 liters). There are also 1,000 liters of available space when you fold the rear seat ISOFIX-furnished flat, although this is still better by Renault Captur (377/1235 liter), among others. We like the little details, like the large speedometer complete with readings kph for a European adventure, plus a pair of large cupholders are located far from any main control, but the super-practical Honda HR-V does not.
Fiat 500X may look good, but like those sepia-filtered projecting Facebook posts perfection families, life is not always a bed of roses. The 500X suffer the traditional drawback into small cars is high, boxy and heavy. It rose competent and reasonably comfortable at higher speeds, but in the city, where the car is going to spend most of the time, traveling constantly busy, crashy and noisy, even on 17-inch alloys are smaller. If you spec off-road version of the 500X, all-terrain tires only produce more road noise. Fortunately, the six-speed manual gearbox has a positive action, but when it is combined with steering wool and vague, preventing you from entering the corner of confidence. If you want a small crossover that directs the right, safely handling and ride competent, try Mazda CX-3.
Fiat 500X offers two diesel engines and one petrol engine in two states of tune. The 118bhp 1.6-liter diesel is the best-selling version in the UK and good for 0-62mph in 10.5sec and 69.9mpg combined, while developing competitive 109g / km CO2. Unfortunately, the diesel unit does not have a blow and heard at all speeds. Even when you upgrade to a larger 2.0-liter diesel, with a nine-speed automatic gearbox, the car still feels noisy and oddly sluggish, with gearchanges jerky and nose-heavy attitude.
If you want your school to walk to have a little more zing, the 138bhp 1.4-liter petrol engine 'Multiair' turbocharged is fizzier, smoother and much quieter. Combined fuel economy figure of 47.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 139g / km may not be anything to shout about, but this machine will make you and your family entertained for longer. Four-wheel drive is available, but only as an option on a rough version of the Cross or Palang Plus; and, while it can get you through some muddy car park, not exactly a mountain goat. Or a Fiat Panda 4x4.
Running costs
Affordability Fiat 500X is very dependent on spec. Choose a 2.0-liter diesel with 4WD and a nine-speed automatic gearbox, for example, and you will travel to a stable £ 27,000 a cliff. However, if you do not mind toward the cheap seats, Fiat 500X much fiscal sense in the lower specification with the cleanest diesel 1.6-liter 'Multijet' similar matching Honda HR-V, Nissan Juke or Mazda CX- 3 for emissions and fuel consumption fuel.
Reliability
Without its predecessor, it is too early to predict the reliability of the Fiat 500X, but a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty is stronger than a three-year, 60,000-mile warranty offered on the Nissan Juke. We also know the sister car, the car 500 cities and 500L MPV, has done well in Warranty Direct Reliability Index.
The level of standard safety equipment on the Fiat 500X will have to play well for families, combining six airbags, ESC (electronic stability control), emergency braking, cruise control, lane-assist and blind spot assist all provided as standard. You can also specify a reversing camera, but other items are available on other small crossover, such as hill start assist, traffic sign recognition or head-up display, not available.
Equipment
Even the entry-level Pop specification provides air conditioning, plus electric front and rear windows, but it looks visually undernourished. Pop Star intermediate level specification adds alloy wheels, climate control, digital radio, (lethargic) sat-nav system, rear parking sensors and Bluetooth to stream music or take phone calls hands-free. The range-topping Lounge car has all of this, plus keyless entry and Bi-xenon headlights are very good.
If you have fallen in love with the Italianate style 500, but need space for young growing families, the 500X has been built for you. That said, keep in mind that the market is full of competitors in the form of the Renault Captur, Skoda Yeti and the Mazda CX-3, all of which we would recommend before 500X.
