The latest iteration of one of what is arguably the most successful franchise in the history of the executive car, the fifth-generation Mercedes E-Class. It is lighter, faster and more economical than the car it replaces, but it's also packed with technology including various autonomous choice that allows for practically drive itself under certain circumstances.
Stand-out power unit at launch will be a new four-cylinder diesel engine, which - contrary to the logic is clear - combining 191bhp with official fuel economy figure 72.4mpg and CO2 emissions of just 102g / km, consider you 're ready to make do with wheels 17-inch minimum.
The new E-Class has grown compared to the previous model, with an increase in the overall length of 43mm to 4923mm and 65mm wheelbase stretch (to 2939mm) increase the space in the cabin. Nevertheless, the extensive use of high and ultra-high-strength steel in the structure have reduced the mass with 220 d is around 100kg lighter than the previous version of the W212, thanks largely to a new all-alloy 'OM654' four-cylinder diesel engine. All versions will have a nine-speed automatic gearbox as standard, and although only rear-drive is available in English at first, we will get the option of four-wheel driven 4-Matic version.
standard equipment in Blighty including parking sensors with reversing camera and the functions of self-parking, navigation and all-around LED lighting. E 220 d go on sale in May, with a cost of £ 35 935 SE sedan and sporty AMG Line that £ 38 430. The six-cylinder E 350D and 350E hybrid E (which uses a four-cylinder gasoline engine) will follow at the end of the year, along with a full set of other variants.
How does it feel?:
Both assured familiar and very impressive, with the position of the E-Class Merc sedan in the middle of the hierarchy is reflected in the way that fragments luxury S-Class with the agility of the C-Class.
the degree of improvement is very good, 220 d become noticeably quieter than its predecessor at any speed. The new engine is rarely more than a background hum, just raise his voice when working hard. The length of a higher transmission ratio - and the engine's ability to attract them - making it very quiet high speed cruising, the engine turning at below 2000rpm in ninth gear at 80 mph. Forms slippery car has only obstacle co-efficient of 0.23, and wind noise is largely absent anything under a kind of speed that is usually reserved for empty Autobahn.
It is really remarkable that the four-cylinder diesel E-Class now can deliver both hybrid rival CO2 figures and near 150mph top speed. The Merc claims 0-62mph time of 7.3 seconds is believed, but not the kind of treatment the car is built for.
Only full-on throttle application-uniform carpet persuade gearbox to hold the tooth beyond 3500rpm; preference is to shift the system early and often, a nine-speed transmission ratios deft drag when you want to make faster progress. Mercedes has also left 'Comfort' mode and 'Sport' for the gearbox, is now part of the overall dynamic setting, controlled by roller button on the center console.
UK-bound E 220 DS will have a lowered suspension comfort as standard, with a 15mm decrease compared to cars in other markets, and the steel springs and dampers passive. On top of this is the Dynamic Body Control, which adds a switchable dampers, and then full air suspension ABC will be the choice of £ 1,495, and that is fitted to the car we drove, provide excellent ride quality.
dynamic excitement is more muted. chassis response was good and the grip level is high, E 220 d refused understeer well but with little sense of an adjustment in the chassis. steering is direct and produce a proportional response, weighted nice though almost no real feeling behind it. Given the impressive size E 220 d accurate and nimble-feeling, especially when rotating between the sequence of corners, and easy to hold the selected row. This is not a ball of fire, even with the Sport chassis transformed into a more aggressive mode, but a good base for more dynamic focused model to be followed.
Not that driving is always necessary. Mercedes keen to encourage dynamic auxiliary battery E-Class can be optioned with, including this drive Pilot which - as the name suggests - allows the car to pretty much turn the driver itself. It combines adaptive cruise control with active steering and could, in the streets of big, keeping the E-Class rolling on the path chosen at the selected speed of up to 130mph, the automotive steering wheel itself right and left because it makes the car in the field.
As with similar systems Tesla was even possible to change lanes on the highway with only indicates the direction you want to go, the car moves after the battery sensor gives the all-clear. To maintain an active system you need to make some sort of input every 30 seconds, to prove you pay that kind of attention. Fail to do so and the car will, eventually, stop yourself and activate his hazard lights. This system works well in the Portuguese toll road, but it can not handle more than a very gentle curve in the small streets.
The cabins are certain deserves praise, felt like fractional downsized version of the S-Class. It is beautifully finished and - with the benefits of exercise options - packaged with the kit. A good room for both front and rear seat occupants - Form E's past will eventually make the majority of taxis Germany - and it is a very comfortable place to spend time. The steering wheel incorporates two touch-sensitive panel to complete small rotary controller in the middle of the car, and that makes it a little easier to navigate between pages on the central display and dashboard.
Should I buy one?:
The new E-Class manages to be better than its predecessor's almost every case, with the possible exception of the front-end styling-heavy grille. Thus, if you ever feel attracted to the medium Merc E 220 d must, as the company's marketing department said, exercises a strong attraction.
Especially so in a segment where the two main rivals - the Audi A6 and BMW 5-Series - a new start to feel a little long in the tooth in some places. E-Class was short on excitement but great in almost everything else, with the comfort and class-leading CO2 numbers that are equally attractive to both private buyers and fleet users.
