Wolfsburg source said VW T-Cross her head into production in 2018 as a sub £ 18,000 rival the likes of the Mazda CX-3 and Nissan Juke.
High-rise new Volkswagen previously described as a model brother T-Roc - VW Golf-based SUV concept bigger was revealed in 2014 and due to reach showrooms in the form of a five-door in 2017.
T-Cross and T-Roc is a part of the volume-segment SUV model strategy being fast tracked by the chairman of Volkswagen Matthias Müller, according to highly placed Volkswagen manager familiar with the company's future portfolio model.
"We will position the production version of the T-Cross and T-Roc under Tiguan and Touareg in the market which is currently experiencing enormous growth for SUV models, including Europe," said the manager.
Both new models are conceived around the German car maker MQB platform extremely flexible and is planned to be offered with a choice of either gasoline, diesel or plug-in hybrid gasoline-electric drivetrains, together with either front-wheel drive or four wheel drive.
As with its bigger brother, the production version of the T-Cross planned to receive a stylish exterior is unique in a step that aims to provide Volkswagen with representation is much more powerful than that provided by the Cross Polo, featuring an exterior the same basis as the standard five-door hatchback Polo, a compact SUV in the ranks of sharp fighting.
Style under the guidance of Volkswagen boss brand design Klaus Bischoff, T-Cross is expected to borrow elements of T-Roc, including the grille full width, side window graphics and wheel arches typical, in an effort to provide two new SUV models with lineage common in many the same way as the existing Polo and Golf hatchback.
Despite the obvious visual similarities, though, Autocar understands outer body of each new SUV will use a unique pressing unrelated to reach the other. Further differentiation will be given by their dimensions, the T-Cross is set to stretch around 4000mm and T-Roc walk to 4200mm.
The original plan of Volkswagen for a smaller SUV based on the same underpinnings as Up, as the first by the concept Taigun at the 2012 Sao Paulo motor show, has been abandoned due, in part, by the financial climate shaky in the South American market locks, including Brazil, where five-door 3800mm length is proposed to be produced.
References to the letter "T" in their names suggest T-Cross and T-Roc will continue the tradition of Volkswagen in which any existing SUV models have received the model name begins with the letter "T", including the Tiguan and Touareg.
