Aston Martin clearly had decided that only sell cars and GT we included four-door Rapide in categorization is a strategy doomed to keep small cripplingly sales volume. And indeed, the brand sold only slightly more than 4000 units worldwide last year. Thus, it is moving to make its Lagonda sedan available in the market than just the Middle East. And at the Geneva auto show, it shows a move to boost sales to unexpected heights by demonstrating GT Crossover, DBX concept.
Greater than the DB9 but smaller than Rapide, DBX is a two-door, four-seat conveyance, to our eyes, looks really sporty despite the large wheels and elevated ride height. This lifting, sports car-type of thing does more than just take the now-familiar design language of Aston and perched it on top of a big wheel although the wheel is certainly large, at 22 inches-as evidenced by a layered effect of the roofline at the C-pillar, how the upper edge of the grille is pulled forward to make shark's nose, and squinting, lamp-lit LED. Black paint with a thin layer of chrome put in to mimic the surface of the black pearl is authentic.
A statement by the CEO of the new Aston Andy Palmer said DBX is "definitely not a GT sports car production-ready," and it is even more obvious once you learn about its powertrain. DBX is an all-wheel-drive EV, with individual electric motor powering each wheel. Oh, and it also claims the drive-by-wire steering, carbon-ceramic brakes with KERS systems, cameras in the side mirrors, and auto-dimming "smart glass." The unique powertrain packaging can not afford concept indisputable advantages, such as front and rear luggage compartment and interior with a flat floor. With a flat floor and a lack of the type of center console, cabin, wearing a black and brown nubuck upholstery, is every bit as appealing to the eye as the exterior.
Aston said that the DBX is a "clear signal line extension of an existing brand models," but how many Aston crossover of the future will look like this concept? Perhaps less than we would expect. For one reason, the production crossover is likely to be a trombone four-door-but-sad even if DBX is simply a signpost for the future design Aston GT, then we would say it was a success.
